How to choose a compliance consultant in Jamaica
Six checks that separate a consultancy which will still be useful at audit time from one that hands over a document pack and disappears.
1. Scope the obligation before the supplier
Write down every obligation you actually carry — Companies Office filings, TAJ and GCT status, Data Protection Act duties, customer-imposed ISO requirements, sector rules. Most bad engagements start with a supplier defining the scope for you.
2. Check local regulatory depth, not just frameworks
Framework knowledge travels; Jamaican process does not. A consultant who has personally filed annual returns with the Companies Office and onboarded clients onto TAJ eServices will save you weeks of avoidable rework.
3. Separate implementation from certification
Your ISO consultant builds the system; an accredited certification body audits it. Anyone offering both should be treated as a red flag.
4. Insist on knowing who delivers
Ask for the name and credentials of the person doing the work, not the practice lead who attends the pitch. This is the single most predictive question in a procurement process.
5. Budget for training
Policies fail at the desk, not in the binder. Scenario-based staff training built on your own incidents is what converts documentation into defensible practice — and it should be quoted, not assumed.
6. Plan for year two
Surveillance audits, annual renewals, changing processing activities. Ask what the ongoing engagement looks like and what it costs before you sign year one.

FAQ
Should I hire one firm or several specialists?
One accountable firm is usually better when your obligations overlap — filings, privacy, ISO and training all draw on the same process documentation. Split the work only when a specialism is genuinely deep.
What credentials should I verify?
Ask for named lead implementer or auditor certifications, examples of comparable Jamaican engagements, and confirmation of who will personally deliver the work rather than who sold it.
Fixed fee or retainer?
Fixed fee suits defined deliverables such as an incorporation, a GCT registration or a gap assessment. Retainers suit ongoing obligations such as outsourced DPO support and compliance monitoring.
